Step 3: Your Report

Once we've received your samples, we'll begin testing. You will get your report within 10 working days.
Our Carius Tube can provide the below valuable outputs:
Constant Ramp Thermal Stability (25 – 400 °C) –
Vapour pressure data
Endothermic/Exothermic temperature onset determination
Onset temperature determination
Onset of permanent gas generation
Quantification of gas volume
Our Carius Tube can also provide the below:
Isothermal Stability of materials/reaction mixtures
High-Rate Carius Tube explosive screening
~10 g required for a single test, larger mass allows for more representative sampling of non-homogenous mixtures, max pressure ~475 psig, samples can be prepared and sealed under different headspaces.

We also undertake the following thermal stability screening and calorimetry tests to simulate full scale chemical processes, chemical process development and process upset conditions.

Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC)

ASTM E 537-24
ISO/IEC:17025 Accredited
Test conducted as a screening method to assess the extent and presence of enthalpic changes and to approximate both the temperature of initiation and enthalpies (heats) of solids, liquids or slurries.
Order Test >

Accelerating Rate Calorimetry (ARC)

ASTM E 1981-22
ISO/IEC:17025 Accredited
Test conducted to assess the time, temperature and pressure data of a material as it undergoes a physicochemical change under near adiabatic conditions.
Order Test >

Reaction Calorimetry (RC)

Bespoke to reaction under study
Testing method is used to identify potential reactive chemical hazards in processes. Each test involves a bespoke developed method depending on the specific requirements of the chemical reaction to be studied.
Order Test >

Advanced Reactive System Screening Tool (ARSST)

Recognised industry standard test
Test is a pseudo-adiabatic calorimeter batch reactor tool that is used to quickly identify potential reactive chemical hazards in processes including the determination of thermal decomposition onsets.

The Carius tube test is used as a small-scale screening tool for thermal stability. It is primarily undertaken to investigate exothermic activity and identify the pressure effects of permanent gas generation. Carius tube testing can also aid in the detection of exothermic activities such as onset temperatures.

The Carius tube test works by placing approximately 10 g of a test material in a heavy-walled sealed glass tube and then placing it in an oven. The oven temperature is then increased at a controlled rate (typically 0.5 °C/min). The temperature and pressure of the test cell are then detailed and recorded to assess the thermal stability of the sample upon heating.

A differential temperature reading between the sample and baseline of the oven can indicate and quantify energetic events, and whether they are exothermic or endothermic. A plot of Ln (pressure) versus the reciprocal of temperature can also indicate the onset temperature of gas generation.

The Carius Tube test can quickly identify thermal regions of interest (exothermic events, structural changes, permanent gas generation), which can then in turn be investigated in more detail using adiabatic or more precise techniques. It is often run as a screening test complimentary to DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry), as it provides the valuable pressure data not available from the DSC.
